I get asked fairly often how I achieve my current hair colour so I thought I’d put together a quick photo how-to for clarity :)
So, I start with getting everything I’m going to need together. A plastic bowl and tint brush, cheapy conditioner, the semi-permanent dye, moisturising cream, a wide toothed plastic comb, some clips, and a rather unattractive dye-stained towel.
Once these are all ready I rinse my hair without using any products and gently comb it through. Some dyes work better on dry hair, so make sure you check. Then I put moisturising cream around my hairline and on my ears to help ensure no dye stains my skin!Next, put on some gloves! Very important if you plan on leaving the house over the next few days. Purple hands aren’t the best look.
Then I put enough conditioner in the bowl to just about cover all my hair. It’s important to get the right amount first time to ensure the dye mix doesn’t come out patchy. I use whatever white conditioner I can find that costs no more than a few quid, I don’t much care what it is.
Next I add the dyes to the bowl. I usually use 1/4 tub of Directions Plum and 1/2 tub of Directions Violet. (This goes on over my previously dyed base colour, Schwarzkopf Live Luminance in Ultra Violet)
Mix this up really well - in the bowl the colours look similar so give it a good mix so you’re sure everything is blended.
Apply! Use clips to section hair if it makes it easier and massage the dye in as if you’re shampooing it. If you have a friend to help you, that’s even better, but it’s super easy to do alone.
Finally, cover in a plastic cap/cling film/a towel and leave for as long as you can. I like to put the dye on in the morning and then do some housework (or watch TV…) and rinse it off hours later.
Remember to do a skin sensitivity test 48 hours before dyeing and that results will differ depending on a number of factors, like your hair type, condition, etc :)
